• The Valipuram Aalvar Kovil is one of the oldest and most revered Hindu temples in Jaffna, located in the Point Pedro area.
• It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, a principal deity in Hinduism known as the preserver and protector of the universe.
• The temple is unique as its main sanctum houses a Vishnu Chakra (disc) instead of a statue, which is taken out for processions during festivals.

What happens during the festival?
• Flag Hoisting: The festival begins with a flag-hoisting ceremony, marking the start of the 17-day celebrations.
• Daily Processions: Each day, a different procession (ther) of the deity is carried around the temple grounds and local area, often on different ceremonial mounts or vahanams.
• Chariot Festival (Ther Thiruvila): This is the grandest event of the festival. The main deity is placed on a large, intricately decorated chariot and pulled by devotees through the streets, symbolizing the journey of the divine.
• Water-Cutting Ceremony (Theertham): On the final day, the deity is taken to the nearby ocean for a sacred ritualistic bath. Devotees also take a dip in the sea, believing it purifies their sins.
